For the spring season, the varsity baseball team has exceeded expectations with a six-game winning streak and has had three consecutive games in which the opposing team did not score. A highlight of this year’s season came when head coach Darren Murphy earned his 500th win at South Hills.
Head coach Darren Murphy has been a prominent mentor to the South Hills baseball program. Murphy explained what moment in his coaching career helped lead up to this 500th win.
“We have always played the best teams, and that’s how we measure our success, and it was fitting that it would come against a very good and respected La Mirada team. Those moments in the past of winning some big games culminated with us being able to handle the pressure that came with everything that night,” Murphy said.
Aside from getting huge wins of his own, Murphy has been an inspiring head coach for his players and has impacted young lives.
Pitcher and utility player Fabian Marez (11) explained what motivates him to keep going and never stop giving it his all.
“Something that motivates me to not quit, is the people around me, they always support me. My parents always give me good advice so that allows me to hold myself to a high standard to be able to be my best self everyday for the team,” Marez said.
Liam Martinez (9), the only freshman on the varsity baseball team, spoke about the brotherhood and atmosphere he has experienced on the team.
“We have good energy, and we have a good bond together as a team, and we just like to work hard and dedicate ourselves to each other”, Martinez said.
Richie Soto(11), a vital catcher for the team, shared his thoughts on coach Murphy’s 500th win.
“There’s a lot of cool moments I would love to replay. But that 500th win was pretty special, we beat a really good team, and it’s just a really special moment with the team,” Soto said.
