As the new year arrives for students and staff at South Hills High School, many share their New Year’s resolutions for 2026 while reflecting on their experience in 2025.
Miguel Vera (11) explained that he looks forward to making new friends and memories with the people he loves most. He shared that one of his goals for 2026 is personal emotional growth. “I want to be able to talk to people and help them feel better and help them feel seen. I want to be able to share my feelings and express myself in a way I haven’t been able to before. Value friendship because you never know when it will end,” Vera said.
Social Science teacher, Cailtyn Ruvalcaba, noted that New Year’s resolutions aren’t really her thing, though she did express some future intentions. “I think something important to me is that life is short and precious, and the people around you- take care of them and they’ll take care of you. I’d like to travel more, grow intellectually and mentally, and spend more time with family and friends,” Ruvalcaba said.
As a first-year South Hills Husky, Emily Costa (9) expressed excitement about 2026 and the new experiences ahead when asked about her New Year’s resolution. “I want to be more independent, I want to have more fun and study more. In 2025 something big I learned was to not care about what others think,” Costa said.
Social Science teacher Dennis James expressed that he has greater aspirations in 2026, noting that since life is short, we should all make the new year adventurous and spontaneous.
“I want to have more adventures outside and do more things, experience life more. I would like to go to the gym four times a week and read more books. I have a lot of trips [planned] like going to Greece and Turkey,” James said.
