When music artist Drake dropped his second studio album “Take Care” in 2011 it was an instant smash, debuting at the top of the album charts, which many say is his best album so far. The album features emotional and uptempo songs with performances from artists such as Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Andre 3000, and Kendrick Lamar. This 14 year old album continues to be a fan favorite. It won a GRAMMY for Best Rap Album and the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year in 2012.
The album begins with “Over My Dead Body,” which opens with a piano melody before singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk enters with her beautiful vocal performance. The song is meant to show how Drake won’t let anyone take away his loved ones while highlighting the achievements of his music career.
“Take Care” is a duet piece between Drake and pop star Rihanna, and it’s a warm and emotional song. The song centers on trust and the willingness to stand by one another through tough times, while recognizing past struggles. It’s also meant to show his care for people and his dedication to his family. The song’s message is very similar to the album’s emotional and sad vibe.
“Lord Knows” is a very uptempo and hard-hitting song. This song features American rapper Rick Ross, who dramatically enhances the track by adding power and weight to the track. The song’s message expresses that he is following God’s plan, which is also a song on Drake’s later album “Scorpion.” The song contrasts the album’s vibe by being an energetic song.
“Look At What You’ve Done” is a letter to Drake’s female family members who helped, sacrificed, and struggled to help Drake fulfill his dreams in music. The beat and lyrics of this song are beautifully crafted to effectively express his feelings and emotions.
The album’s closing track, “The Ride”, explores Drake’s reflection on the challenges that accompany fame, success, and wealth as well as the pressure to maintain a positive public image. In my opinion, this album is one of the best in Drake’s discography. It expresses emotion, power, and the ability to overcome certain challenges. I’d give the album a solid 10 out of 10 and would highly recommend it.
