The fall season is the perfect time to cozy up and watch a Tim Burton film, with fan favorites including “Edward Scissorhands”, “Frankenweenie”, “Corpse Bride”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and “Beetlejuice”. Tim Burton is known for his unorthodox film style characterized by dark, fantastical atmospheres. Huskies at South Hills talked about their favorite Tim Burton movie and why they love it.
Edward Scissorhands
A famous film starring actor Johnny Depp tells the story of a human being who was an unfinished creation by a scientist, left with scissors as hands, and soon discovered by a saleslady. He is taken to the saleslady’s home, where he falls in love with her teenage daughter. Spanish teacher Wendolyne Maldonado shared that Edward Scissorhands is her favorite character. “ Tim Burton captures those not considered normal, and when you present Edward Scissorhands, he’s such an outcast, but at the same time, he has a heart of gold,” Maldonado said.
Frankenweenie
The story of Frankenweenie focuses on a young boy named Victor who is often cast out by the kids at his school, and his only friend is his dog Sparky. An unfortunate event happens, and Victor tries to figure out how to fix this misfortune. The animation is very intriguing because it’s done entirely in black and white- perfect for that spooky but sweet vibe. Mike Medina (12) shared that Frankenweenie was his favorite movie because of its unusual animation. “Frankenweenie is very peculiar and may not be for some, but if you enjoy watching unique films, then this would be one to watch for the fall season,” Medina said.
Corpse Bride
A familiar favorite, “Corpse Bride”, is an unrequited love story. Victor, a shy man, proposes to a dead bride known as Emily by accident while he was practicing his vows. Emily believes Victor and she are now happily married and takes him to where the dead live, while his actual fiancée, Victoria, begins to worry about him. I think many people find themselves watching this movie for a cute and spooky love story. The animation is also very dark but intriguing. “My favorite Tim Burton character is Victor because in the movie he’s really nice to people and he’s understanding of Emily and Victoria,” Jacobo Cortez (11) said.
Alice in Wonderland
Fantasy and mystery are the two words I would use to describe “Alice in Wonderland.” Alice falls into a rabbit hole where she encounters various adventures, only to wake up and realize it was all a dream. Nazareth Cibrian-Sabillion (12) is a big fan of “Alice and Wonderland” because of its eerie and whimsical vibe. “Alice in Wonderland is my top one because I like the animation style and all the pretty colors and it still has a dark mystery involved,” Cibrian-Sabillon said.
Beetlejuice 2
This uncanny film revolves around Beetlejuice, a ghost who was hired by a couple, who were also ghosts, to scare away buyers from their home. Beetlejuice also decides to be mischievous and stir things up, causing chaos. “Beetlejuice 2” is a movie where you can enjoy a good laugh and also experience some ghostly vibes that you may want to get comfortable in your seats to watch. Beetlejuice is a good family movie with a Tim Burton twist. “My first impression of ‘Beetlejuice 2’ was that it was a really good movie and I really enjoyed it because of the plot line,” Leila Ramirez (12) said.
