JV football players (from left to right, Tyler Arguinzoni, Thomas Meza-Morris, and Francisco Morales) finish up their practice at the South Hills High field in preparation for their game against Don Lugo. The Huskies won, 27-16.

Three junior varsity football players shared their thoughts about the start of their 2022 season.

Jacob Calderon, the South Hills High football coach, came from Bishop Amat after last year’s season record was 0-10.

“Coach Cal is a really solid and good coach. He’s good at taking initiative and disciplining the whole team,” freshman Tyler Arguinzoni said.

The Huskies started this season off with their first win, against Diamond Ranch High School, winning 20-0. When asked what the key to a successful game is, Francisco Morales said,  “I get motivated, stay positive, and get ready to play aggressively in the game.”

Many of the players, such as freshmen Frank Morales and Tommy Meza-Morris, have formed strong friendships and have supported each other throughout the season.

“My favorite thing about the football team is we are like brothers. We’re a family and they support me in every way, especially Tommy,” Morales said.

As they continued to bond, their friendship inspired one another to work harder, leading to other victories.

“It was a great feeling, knowing that we worked hard and we got to take a dub [a win] back because of our hard work. I also felt it made us want to work two times harder than the week before so we could have that feeling the next week,” Meza-Morris said.

With 10 games in the season, the players made sure every moment was worth it.

“It’s always love and fun everywhere until it comes to game day then everyone’s focused,” Arguinzoni said.
