The NFL kicked off its 2025 season on Sept. 4 with an exciting opening week. Students and a football coach at South Hills shared their thoughts on their favorite teams and their first week performances.
The season opener featured the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. This rivalry made for an exciting start to the season, given the history between these two teams. SHHS assistant football coach Alex Carrasco, who is a huge Cowboys fan, shared his reaction to the team’s loss.
“So my main takeaway is they could’ve won the game. Ceedee Lamb dropped too many balls in key moments and towards the end of the game Cowboys had a chance to win and they throw to there and he drops the ball. They played the Super Bowl defending champs and they played them really tough,” Carrasco said.
The Los Angeles Chargers began their season against the Kansas City Chiefs at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Based on past games, many expected the Chiefs to win, but the Chargers secured a 27-21 victory. South Hills student and Charger fan, Max Barajas (11), explained how he felt after his team won against the Chiefs.
“It was good. We haven’t beat them in 4 years and it felt good to accomplish that,” Barajas said.

The Las Vegas Raiders surprised fans by defeating the New England Patriots 20-13 at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. Lucy Guzman (11), a die-hard Raiders fan, explained her expectations for the season.
“I think they are gonna do better because they have a new coach, but I don’t know. I feel like it’s too early in the season to tell but they did do good for the first game,” Guzman said.
The San Francisco 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks after taking a win in Seattle at Lumen Field. A pivotal moment in the game was when the 49ers got a Seahawks fumble and turned the game around. Matthew Tharrett (9), a fan of the 49ers, explained what he believes would’ve happened if that didn’t occur.
“It would have been a lot tougher to stop [the ball] if Bosa didn’t force the fumble, but I think we could’ve [won]”, Therett said.
