For the second year in a row, The South Hills varsity flag football team took the crown during their rivalry game against West Covina High School on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The Huskies defended their title in a thrilling game that showed their teamwork, determination, and drive to defend the crown, securing a 14-0 victory.
Haley Ramos (11), the team’s quarterback, explained what the turning point was during this competitive game and how her performance helped lead the team to victory.
“I believe the turning point in the game was the first touchdown scored by Ayana Roquemore (11) before halftime, once she scored and we got the extra point we knew from there the game was ours,” Ramos said. “Being able to read the defense helped me be able to spread the ball out which helped lead us to victory.”
Ayana Roquemore (11) secured the lead for the Huskies by scoring the first touchdown in the second quarter. Roquemore described the thoughts racing through her mind as she ran the ball to the endzone.
“So many feelings and thoughts were running through my mind when I was running the ball to the endzone, I kept telling myself to stay focused and don’t let anything stop me and to keep pushing,” Roquemore said. “I believe that after scoring the first touchdown the energy for the entire team changed greatly because it boosted our confidence and it pushed us to keep going.”
The second touchdown was scored by Kassidy Hockenhull (11), which set the score at 14-0. Hockenhull explained how she felt scoring the last touchdown for the team.
“Scoring that touchdown was really important because before I scored, they still had a chance to come back. But once I got it, West Covina dropped their heads a little, which helped seal the game for us,” Hockenhull said.
