Light Up The Night, a longtime annual tradition at South Hills High School, is the school’s showcase which features the school’s programs. This year it took place on February 27, 2025.
One of the highlights of Light Up The Night was the showcase of diverse performing groups, including the dance team, cheer team, and theatre program. Many students participated in multiple activities and had to prepare for their various performances quickly.
South Hills dance team was one of the groups that performed for Light Up The Night. Matthew Arvizu (12) has been a part of the dance team for three years and currently serves as a captain. He shared that their dance for Light Up The Night was a mix of highlights from their competition routine.
“It really showed everything we do, from all ranges of choreography and difficulty and style. It showcased our varsity small, our varsity medium, and our JV team, and I thought it was a really good piece to perform for Light Up The Night to show off our team,” Arvizu said.
Cheer was another group that performed. They also performed part of their competition routine.
“We started working on it in the summer and we got really strong with it towards October. I liked it because it showed our enthusiasm, but it didn’t show some things like stunting and tumbling. But it showed our school spirit, which is what cheer is all about,” Jayleen Fuentes (12) said.
Light Up The Night offers middle school students and their parents an opportunity to explore the activities and achievements happening throughout the school. A few middle school students discussed what they saw at the showcase and how excited they would be to be a part of it once they joined South Hills in a few years.
“What made me really excited today was the theatre, it was very exciting and I just loved how they performed so well,” Jacqueline Roman (7) said.
While some students were interested in the performing aspects, others were interested in different electives, like Immoen Eichen (7).
“I’m definitely excited for the art program. It is very cool and I’m excited if I get into art to do those amazing works of art,” Eichen said.
Parents of South Hills students also got to see some of the work their children have done this school year. Ria Garcia, who has two students attending South Hills, shared that she has high hopes for her daughter Micaela Garcia (9).
“I’m excited for Micaela to be more involved in theatre. I believe it will help her enhance herself and be more out there. She’s already involved with cheer, but I want Micaela to be more out there, so I think the theatre will help her bloom like a flower,” Garcia said.
Light Up The Night has once again lit up the hard work the Huskies have put in at South Hills.
“I’m very impressed with what my children are doing. I’m very proud of them,” Garcia said.
