The Kansas City Chiefs sought to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, but the Philadelphia Eagles prevented that after defeating them 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.
During the first quarter Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ran the first touchdown of the game, making the score 7-0 for the first quarter final.
The second quarter was led by the Eagles 10-0 after Jake Elliot made a 48 yard field goal to give the Eagles two more points. A.J Brown hauled in a 12 yard touchdown throw from Hurts, putting the Eagles up 24-0.
Philadelphia took a 24-0 lead into halftime, forcing Kansas City to think twice about their strategy for a comeback.
Into the third quarter Elliot made a 29-yard field goal extending Philadelphia’s lead to 27-0. Hurts then delivered a deep pass to DeVonta Smith for a 46- yard touchdown adding seven points to the Eagles. With Philadelphia’s score mounting, the Chiefs finally broke through when Patrick Mahomes completed a pass to Xavier Worthy for a 24-yard score, ending the third quarter at 34-6.
The final quarter of the game started with Elliot making 48 and 50-yard field goals, adding a total of seven points to the Eagles 40-6. The Chiefs make a 7-yard touchdown plus a two point conversion making the score 40-14. To end the game Mahomes made a pass to Worthy for a 50-yard touchdown, making the final score 40-22.
