Remember the Menendez brothers? Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, in 1989. Their story has been told in the new Netflix series “Monsters.” The series aired on September 19. “Monsters” presents the story of the Menendez brothers leading up to the murder of their parents from multiple perspectives, with the brothers’ viewpoint serving as the central narrative.
Actor Nicholas Alexander Chaves did a compelling job playing Lyle Menendez. He captured the emotional complexity and inner turmoil of the brother through subtle facial expressions, body language, and voice changes. Allowing the audience to understand the psychological depth behind Lyle’s actions.
Actor Cooper Koch effectively conveyed Erik’s emotional vulnerability and the weight of the trauma he experienced. His performance brought depth to the character, making Erik’s actions more understandable within the context of his troubled family life.
There is some controversy from Erik Menendez about “Monsters” saying that Lyle was portrayed completely wrong and that he wasn’t a maniac who enjoyed killing his parents.
“I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show,” Erik Menendez said.
Not only have the Menendez brothers gained fans from the new series, more evidence has arised proving the abuse that was going on inside the Beverly Hills home. Since new evidence has been uncovered, the brothers will get a court date about a possible resentence.
NBC Los Angeles stated that a “Los Angeles judge who will decide whether or not Erik and Lyle Menendez will be resentenced – and as a result, possibly released from prison on parole – has scheduled a Dec. 11 hearing.”
Overall, “Monsters” isn’t just about the murders of the parents of the Menendez brothers, it also makes us think about what turns people into monsters. Is it something they’re born with, or do their life experiences shape them? Their case makes us question how family and upbringing can influence someone’s actions.
I highly recommend watching this series. Especially if you enjoy drama, crime, and psychological thrillers, this series is for you.
