The South Hills football team has reclaimed their crown after five years. The new reigned royalty was bestowed after the Huskies took a 16-13 win over the Bulldogs in their crosstown rival game on Friday the 13 of September.
The Huskies managed to improve their offense in preparation for this game which led them to victory. Danny Resendiz (12), who was a huge factor that night, scored two touchdowns that impacted the game strongly. Resendiz explained how he prepared himself for this rousing game.
“I was injured the week before West Co, so I had an extra two weeks to recover my body which prepared me for the game. I would say our team just stepped it up; practice was very intense this week, everyone was just feeling good and ready to play,” Resendiz said.
Besides the great offense, the Huskies had an astonishing defense. Messiah Luter (12) was able to force multiple fumbles and sack West Covina’s quarterback. Luter described how he was able to make contact with the opposing players and succeed.
“Honestly just putting in all of my energy into the game and doing my job on defense made me be able to help my team with winning this huge game,” Luter said.
Although the team took the title of Kings of Cameron, it was not so easy to achieve. Sebastian Morinaga (11) explained the challenge he had while he was playing on the night of KOC.
“The adversity we had to face was difficult. [West Covina’s] student section being loud and ours going back and forth with them, it was just a dog fight throughout the whole game,” Morinaga said.
After winning this game, players like Joseph Gutierrez (12) reflected on what this game means to him and his fellow teammates.
“This game was very important because us Seniors, we haven’t won since our freshman year and it’s just been very important to all of us. We definitely have more of a connection to this game than any others,” Gutierrez said.
Coach Jacob Calderon explained that it feels great being crowned kings and that this particular group of players deserved it. He acknowledged that the Senior group were sophomores when he started as the head Football coach at South Hills.
“I’m just happy they stuck around and decided to build the program back with me. They deserve every piece of credit that the program is getting, they’re leading the team like they should be and we just hope to continue the success for the rest of the season together,” Calderon said.
