Met Gala looks: Reviews and ratings
May 24, 2023
The Met Gala is an Annual Gala at the Metropolitan Museum to raise money for the museum’s Art Costume Institute. Each Gala has a certain theme, last year was Gilded Glamour, and this year’s is A Line of Beauty, dedicated to the late German fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, who inspired brands like Chanel, Fendi, and his own brand named after him. There are many factors that go into choosing an eye-catching outfit to wear to this invite-only red carpet event, such as how unique it is, but also how well it matches the theme. Here are some looks we feel are worth talking about.
1. Pete Davidson
The American Comedian who is most known for his contribution as a cast member in the show Saturday Night Live is ditching the traditional tuxedo he wore last year to this red carpet event. Instead, he showed up wearing an outfit that consists of a bucket hat, graphic T-shirt, gloves, and a long black trench coat designed by Fendi. This casual outfit breaks a lot of the standard attire worn by men to this event and breaks tradition with a more relaxed approach. Although this is a different approach to what is typically seen, it does connect to the theme because of the black trench coat by Fendi. The look overall doesn’t really stand out as bold or super interesting giving this outfit a 4 out of 10.
2. Pedro Pascal
Pedro Pascal has had an eventful year so far, starring in the popular HBO Max TV show The Last Of Us, attending the Oscars, and even winning MTV’s Movie & TV award for ‘Best Hero.’ He is attending the Met Gala for the second time since 2019. The actor showed up wearing a crimson and black Valentino look featuring a pair of shorts. This stands out from many other traditional red carpet looks with its bright color and long coat, but it isn’t fully on the theme and doesn’t do Lagerfeld justice as Valentino is a known competitor of Chanel giving this look a 5 out of 10.
3. Janelle Monáe
The eight-time Grammy-nominated artist showed up to fashion’s biggest event in a black & white grand tweed coat that unveils a wire-framed circular mesh dress. She notes that this was a tribute to Lagerfeld as she first attended the Met Gala alongside Karl in 2011. The singer chose to wear Chanel this year to honor Lagerfeld’s impact on her life and fashion journey. This outfit is not only well put-together but is also on-theme which deserves a well-earned 8.5 out of 10.
4. Doja Cat
Many have been sharing their opinions on Doja Cat’s cat-like outfit. The American rapper went all out with a halter top and feathery train designed by Oscar de la Renta. This is tied in with sparkling baklava and topped with cat ears. The main thing many have been talking about is the prosthetics it took to really sell the feline look. Doja Cat also did not disappoint and stayed true to this character by meowing during interviews, which sells the whole look. This dedication to this character gives the Grammy winner an 8.5 out of 10.
5. Jenna Ortega
A new young star on the rise, Jenna Ortega did not hold back when it came to the 2023 Met Gala. This is not the young actress’s first time at the Met as she did attend in May 2022 in a hot pink Valentino ensemble. With her most recent and popular role as Wednesday in the Netflix show Wednesday the actress thinks that the look actually ties a lot into the character she played and just can’t exactly rub off the character’s fashion style. The look itself has Ortega in a monochromatic black and white look with several ruffles and frills. She wears a black Thom Browne corset dress paired with a white collared undershirt topped with a black bow, a black bolero-style long-sleeved jacket as well as a large detachable skirt that fanned behind her showing off her legs. Her look featured pearl and chain motifs along the sides of the jacket and on the edge of the frills of her skirt. Her jewelry is silver earrings with black knee-high stockings followed by some retro black and white platform shoes. Her hair was halfway up with tendrils of hair framing her face. The chic and detailed gown earns this look a strong 8.5/10.
6. Anok Yai
Many may not know of the South Sudanese-American Model, Anok Yai, but she sure caught everyone’s attention when she showed up in this stunning Prabal Gurung dress. This dress resembles a jellyfish and is eye-catching because of its hand-embroidered gold and silver sequinces. Although it is hard to tell how this outfit connects to the theme this dress perfectly complements Yai and deserves a high 9 out of 10.
7. Jared Leto
Now this is a look that many people weren’t expecting. In memory of Langferd’s beloved cat Choupette, the pet reportedly left over $1.6 million from Lagerfeld’s will, this costume was left a huge secret to the public as to show an even bigger surprise at the event. The costume was kept in one locked room that worked with a small team to prevent any leaks. Leto did not want anybody to know that it was him in this costume until he revealed the big surprise. The costume itself is made of synthetic fur and was painted to match all the variations of color on the real Choupette’s fur. If you’re wondering whether or not Leto was sweating under this suit it actually had a built-in cooling mechanism for the face, battery-powered fans pumping air. In order for the costume to be revealed quickly remove the more mellow second outfit underneath. They utilized “breakaway seam lines” that were hidden underneath the fur in the back. This look holds such detail and personality that only Leto could bring earning this look a strong 9/10.
8. Anne Hathaway
A fabric that Lagerfeld used over and over, Anne Hathaway showed up to the Met in a body-hugging white tweed Versace gown. This strapless piece includes sultry cutouts along the torso highlighting one extended thigh-high leg slit. These cutouts are held together by the Italian fashion house’s iconic gold safety pins. Her look further accessorized this gown with matching tweed opera gloves, white platform pumps, and a stunning diamond choker by Bulgari. This look highlights Lagerfeld’s most noticeable styles which earns it a strong 9/10.
9. Dua Lipa
One of the five co-chairs of the evening, Dua Lipa came out to the Met in Claudia Schiffer’s iconic 1992 Chanel Bridal Tween Dress. The stunning ballgown-shaped dress has a voluminous skirt with a fringed hemline that is enhanced by a structured corset with black-and-white striped piping. The outfit is paired with a massive square pendant that hangs from the singer’s 200+ carat Tiffany diamond necklace along with matching rings and metallic pointy-toed shoes. Her hair was designed with big blow-out curls with makeup featuring winged eyeliner and a matte mauve lip. The first person to ever wear the legendary Lucida Star Necklace (worth over $10 million), Dua Lipa has really become a candidate for best dressed at the 2023 Met Gala. With a well-deserved rating, this outfit is a stunning 9/10.
10. Elle Fanning
An actor who everyone may forever be known as Princess Aurora, Elle Fanning did not hesitate when it came to honoring the late designer. More of a woodland take on this Chanel dress, Fanning wears a lace Vivienne Westwood gown paired with a black bolero jacket. Her hair hangs down in loose waves held by a ribbon-adorned flower crown and is highlighted by Cartier jewelry and a bouquet of fresh flowers. This look is uniquely Fannings as it was a meaningful memoir of when Lagerfeld had photographed her for his ‘Little Black Jacket’ book when she was 13 years old. Fanning recalls how Karl had personalized everyone’s look that day, placing a daisy crown on her head and a jacket over the white gown she had arrived in. This look holds memory, meaning, and personality that earns it an amazing rating of 9.5/10.
Overall, the 2023 Met Gala had a lot of stunning outfits from Anne Hathaway to Anok Yai, everyone’s look was definitely well put together in their own ways and we cannot wait to see what 2024 has to offer.
